COPA Compliant Age Verification
The more layers of protection you can add to your website the better and although this script has not been tested in court, I believe it offers the best way to show your intent to keep minors from viewing the content on your website short of requiring a credit card and a password.
By adding this script to your index page you will be including one or two fields that ask for the age and name of the visitor and must be filled in before they can click on your 'enter' button.
Instructions:
1. Download the zip file and unzip the file.
2. Open the file named index.js and change the line that reads 'domain=.yourdomainname.com"' to the main domain of your website. Save the file.
3. Open the file named 'index.htm' and make any design changes you would like or copy the script section and add it to your existing index page. Change the part that reads "main.html" in the following line <form action="main.html" onsubmit="return(checkFields());" name="form1"> to forward to the main page of your website. Be sure not to remove the line between the <head> and </head> tags that reads <SCRIPT SRC="index.js"></SCRIPT>. Save the file.
Steps 4 and 5 are what I believe makes this script unique and nearly foolproof. By following these steps, it won't matter what page a visitor to your website lands on, if they've never visited your site before they will automatically be forwarded to your warning/disclaimer page first. Although I highly recommend doing this, it is optional.
4. Optional (skip this step if you don't want to protect any of your internal pages.) Open the file named main.js and change the line that reads 'self.parent.location="http://www.yoursitename.com/index.html";' to the page that you want the interior pages of your site to forward the visitor to. This should be your main page that contains the legal disclaimer and electronic signature form. Save the file.
5. Optional - Add <SCRIPT SRC="main.js"></SCRIPT> between the <head> and </head> tags of any interior pages of your website that you want to protect.
6. Upload the appropriate .js files and any other page that you've modified to your server.
7. NOTE: The default age has been set to 18. Anyone under 18 gets bounced to Yahoo. If you prefer you can easily change the age in the index.js script as well as the url of the page they get bounced to. I recommend sending them to a non adult site that you are an affiliate for.
